The Transforming GRACES

At Oikos, our community practices rhythms drawn from the life of Israel, the life of Jesus, and the history of the church that we call the Transforming GRACES. GRACES is an acronym for:

  • Give thanks.

  • Reflect on the Word.

  • Ask deeper questions.

  • Commune with God.

  • Eat together.

  • Serve your neighbor.

The GRACES aren’t extraordinary. In fact, they’re very ordinary. The GRACES are what we do every week in our Sunday Gathering. We sing and give thanks to God. We have a time of teaching to reflect on the Word. At the table, we ask a question to prompt prayer. We commune in prayer and the Lord’s Supper. We eat together with the bread and the cup. Finally, we have a rotation where each partner serves about once a month on a ministry team. Every Oikos partner has built their own GRACES rhythm of life, and our OIkos Groups also practice the GRACES together each month.

But ordinary and familiar doesn’t make them any less powerful. As the name of the GRACES suggests, these habits rely on God’s grace for their effectiveness. But they also rely on our participation. They are a means of grace. When we practice the GRACES, we sow to the Spirit, trusting that we will reap eternal life (Galatians 6:8).

Would you like to build your own rhythm of life? Our “Welcome Home” course equips you to do just that. Welcome Home is an 8-week course which runs a few times per year. It’s a deep dive into discipleship and community at Oikos.
